[마이데일리 = 이규림 기자] 플라이투더스카이가 '몇집'이라고 부르는 대신 자신들의 앨범을 이름으로 불러달라고 밝혔다.
최근 발매된 플라이투더스카이의 신보 '노 리미테이션스(No Limitations)' 표지에는 이 앨범이 플라이투더스카이의 몇번째 앨범인지를 알 수 있는 숫자가 전혀 적혀있지 않다. 많은 가수들이 자신의 앨범 장수에 의미를 부여해 '싸집(싸이 4집)', '거북이 사요(거북이 4집)', '럭키세븐(공일오비 7집)' 등의 이름을 정하는 것과는 조금 다른 전략인 셈.
플라이투더스카이는 최근 마이데일리와의 인터뷰에서 "이번 앨범에서는 일부러 몇 집인지를 밝히지 않으려고 커버에서 숫자를 빼버렸다"며 "7집 앨범이라고 부르는 대신 '노 리미테이션스(No Limitations)'라고 이름을 불러달라"고 제안했다.
플라이투더스카이의 멤버 환희는 "소속사를 옮기고 나서부터 우리의 의견이 반영된 앨범을 만들 수 있었고 마음가짐도 많이 바뀌었다"며 "이번 앨범은 그런 의미에서 우리에게 두번째 앨범인데 2집이라고 하기도 이상해서 그냥 숫자를 빼버렸다"고 설명했다.
브라이언 역시 "외국 가수들은 원래 몇 집이라고 하지 않고 앨범 이름을 부른다"며 "앨범 장 수는 나이처럼 의미없는 숫자에 불과한 만큼 그냥 이름으로 앨범을 불러달라"고 당부했다.
플라이투더스카이는 이번 새 앨범에 처음으로 자작곡을 수록했으며 가성으로 노래를 부르는 등 다양한 시도를 해 기존 플라이투더스카이의 틀을 넘어섰다는 의미로 앨범 제목을 '노 리미테이션스'로 정했다.
플라이투더스카이는 현재 타이틀 곡 '마이엔젤'로 활동하고 있으며 플라이투더스카이는 8월 초 일본에서 첫번째 팬미팅을 가질 예정이다.

플투스, 오사카 팬미팅으로 日진출 '시동'

남성듀오 플라이투더스카이가 일본 오사카에서 팬미팅을 가지며 일본 진출에 시동을 건다.
플라이투더스카이는 오는 8월5일과 6일 이틀간 오사카 시어터 브라바에서 악수회를 겸한 팬미팅을 갖는다. 애초 8월5일 1회 행사를 계획했지만, 현지에서 입장권 판매를 시작하자마자 동시에 매진사례를 이뤄 1회를 추가했다.
1500명을 수용할 수 있는 시어터 브라바에서 플라이투더스카이는 최신곡 '마이 엔젤' 등 7곡의 노래를 부를 예정이며, 행사 마지막에는 악수회와 기념촬영 등의 시간을 가질 예정이다.
플라이투더스카이는 일본에서 정식 프로모션 활동을 벌인 적이 없지만, 한류팬을 중심으로 노래가 알려졌으며, 특히 환희가 주연한 드라마 '오버 더 레인보우'가 일본에서 방영되면서 팬들이 급증했다.
플라이투더스카이는 지난해부터 일본의 대형 기획사로부터 러브콜을 받아왔지만, 브라이언의 솔로활동과 환희의 연기자 변신으로 인해, 일본내에서 활동할 충분한 시간을 갖지 못해 일본 진출이 미뤄졌다.
플라이투더스카이는 이번 팬미팅을 계기로 국내는 물론 일본 활동에도 박차를 가할 계획이다.
올해로 활동 9년 차에 접어든 플라이투더스카이는 현재 7집 타이틀곡 '마이 엔젤'로 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다.

환희 "만능이 될 각오 없이 가수 하지 마!" 거침없는 충고

[이데일리 SPN 박미애기자] "저희 때만 해도 가수는 노래만 잘하면 괜찮았죠. 하지만 시대가 많이 달라졌어요. 이제는 가수도 만능이 되지 않으면 살아남을 수가 없어요."

환희의 말이다. 환희는 최근 이데일리SPN과의 인터뷰를 하던 중 침체된 음반시장에 대해서 이야기 하면서 후배 가수들에게 이렇게 충고했다.

"가수 뿐만 아니라 연예인이 되려면 만능이 돼야겠다는 각오를 하고 도전했으면 좋겠어요. 노래도 하고, 연기도 하고, 개그도 하고. 그런 마음가짐 없이 단순히 노래가 좋아서 이 세계에 뛰어들면 오래 살아남지 못해요."

이 말에 환희에게 '음악만으로 승부하기엔 한계를 느끼고 있는지, 그래서 연기를 시작하게 된 것인지'를 물었다.

그러자 그는 "한계를 느껴서가 아니라 한 살이라도 어릴 때 연기에 도전해보고 싶었어요. 관심이 많았거든요. 그리고 지금까지 못 느꼈다고 해도 미래를 생각해야 하니까 연기뿐만 아니라 만능이 돼야 한다는 생각을 해요"라며 솔직하게 답했다.

이어 브라이언도 환희의 말을 거든다.

"음반 낼 때마다 느끼는 거지만 너무 힘들어요. 저희만 그런 게 아니라 모든 가수들이 알게 모르게 음반을 내는 걸 두려워하고 있더라고요."

하지만 환희는 "저희는 우리 둘 밖에 없는 목소리를 갖고 있으니까 크게 걱정은 하지 않아요"라며 롱런하는 그룹이 되겠다고 다짐했다.

플라이투더스카이는 최근 7집 앨범 '노 리미테이션스(No Limitations)'를 발표했다. 환희는 만화가 허영만의 작품을 원작으로 한 드라마 '사랑해'에 캐스팅돼 곧 안방극장을 공략할 계획이다.

브라이언 "연예인되면서 사람 만나는게 부담, 혼자 자주 지내"

[이데일리 박미애기자] "연예인이라서 힘들었던 건, 주변 사람들이 변한다는 사실을 깨닫게 됐을 때인 것 같아요."

데뷔한지 어느 덧 9년차. '연예인이기 때문에 힘든 일은 없느냐'는 질문에 브라이언은 주변 사람들이 변하는 걸 지켜보면서 심적으로 힘들었다고 고백했다.

최근 이데일리 SPN과 인터뷰에서 브라이언은 연예인이 된 후 사람을 의심하는 버릇이 생겼다고 말했다.

"친구는 물론 여자 친구를 사귈 때에도 조심해야 해요. 실제로 어떤 여성분은 저한테 우리나라 가수에 대해 잘 모른다고 했지만 나중에 알고 보니 제 팬이었고 의도적으로 접근한 거였더라고요..."

그런 일을 겪으면서 브라이언은 사람에 대한 의심이 많이 생겼다며 밖에 나가서 사람들과 어울리기 보다는 혼자 있는 시간이 많아졌다고 털어놨다.

환희도 "밖에서 친구들과 편하게 어울리기 쉽지 않다"며 연예인이기 때문에 무조건 친절해야 하고, 연예인이기 때문에 말과 행동을 조심해야 하고, 연예인이기 때문에 욱하는 성격도 버려야 한다는 생각 때문에 때때로 스트레스를 받기도 한다고 거들었다.

최근 플라이투더스카이는 7집 '노 리미테이션스(No Limitations)'를 발표하고 왕성하게 활동을 하고 있다. 브라이언은 MBC 음악 프로그램 '쇼! 음악중심'의 MC를 맡아 강인과 함께 진행하고 있다.

대중성에 신경쓴 새 음반...여름철에 듣는 발라드의 묘미

9년차 가수 플라이투더스카이가 발표한 이번 앨범은 다른 어느 때보다 '대중성'을 많이 신경썼다. 댄스가 아닌 발라드로 여름을 뜨겁게 보내기로 했다고 한다.

타이틀곡인 '마이 엔젤(My Angel)'은 브라이언과 환희의 감미로운 음색이 돋보이는 곡으로 노랫말은 슬프지만 우울하진 않은 아름다운 곡이라는 게 플라이투더스카이의 설명이다.

특히 '대중성'을 고려하게 된 까닭에 대해 이들은 활동을 하면서 음악이 어려우면 듣지 않게 된다는 걸 누구보다도 잘 알게 됐다고 말했다. 그러면서 다른 장르에 비해 발라드에 대한 애정이 높은 것도 듣기 쉽고 편하기 때문이라며 이번 앨범을 통해 대중들의 큰 사랑을 받고 싶다는 속내를 내비쳤다.

'마이 엔젤'과 같은 발라드 외에도 7집에는 솔, 재즈, 그리고 클럽 음악 등 플라이투더스카이의 다양한 색깔을 엿볼 수 있는 곡들이 많다.

특히 멤버들의 자작곡인 '키싱 유(Kissing You)'와 '가벼운 사랑'을 사랑은 브라이언과 환희의 음악적인 가능성을 가늠해볼 수 있는 곡으로 팬들의 많은 사랑을 받고 있다.

플라이투더스카이는 "말보단 행동으로 보여주는 것이 더 옳은 것 같다"며 자신들이 열심히 하는 모습을 지켜봐 달라고 팬들에게 당부했다.

7집을 발표한 플라이투더스카이는 버라이어티와 음악 프로그램을 통해 왕성하게 활동하고 있다. 브라이언은 MBC 음악 프로그램 '쇼! 음악중심'을 통해 MC영역으로 발을 넓혔으며, 환희는 지난해 출연한 드라마 '오버 더 레인보우'를 통해 연기자로 변신했고 드라마 '사랑해'를 통해 이미지 변신을 꾀할 예정이다.

[이데일리 SPN 박미애기자] "아이들(idol) 이미지 벗으려고 노력했던 적은 없어요."

플라이투더스카이가 7집 앨범 '노 리미테이션스(No Limitations)'를 발표하고 본격적인 활동에 나섰다.

브라이언과 환희가 플라이투더스카이라는 이름으로 데뷔한 지도 어느 덧 9년째 접어들었다. 두 사람이 처음 만난 건 1998년, 10년지기 친구다. 강산도 변한다는 10년의 세월이 흘러서일까. 1, 2집 때의 앳된 모습을 찾을 수가 없는 플라이투더스카이다.

◇ 변화는 자연스러운 것....아이들 이미지 가끔씩 그리워

플라이투더스카이는 최근 이데일리SPN과의 인터뷰에서 아이들 이미지를 벗기 위해 노력한 적은 없다고 분명히 말했다.

플라이투더스카이는 1999년 1집을 발표하고 당시 아이들 그룹 중에서도 '꽃미남'으로 주목받았다. 그랬던 이들이 3,4집을 거치면서 서서히 변화해 현재의 모습에 이르렀다.

흔히 아이들 그룹은 시간이 흐르면서 변화의 한계를 느낀다고 한다. 한 번 박힌 아이들 이미지를 극복하기 쉽지 않기 때문이다. 그래서 많은 아이들 그룹들이 이미지 변신에 고민하다가 좌절하는 경우도 적지 않다.

플라이투더스카이도 아이들로 데뷔한 그룹이기 때문이기 때문에 그런 고민이 없지 않았을 것 같았다.

"그런 얘기가 많지만 오히려 저희는 아이들 이미지가 남아 있었으면 좋겠어요. 아이들 이미지가 없다는 건 그만큼 나이를 먹었다는 뜻으니까 어쩐지 서러운 생각도 들거든요. 운동 시작하면서 자연스럽게 '남자다워졌다'는 말을 듣기 시작했는데 이미지 변신을 위해서 그랬다고 오해하는 사람도 많았죠."(브라이언)

"그러고 보면 세월이 참 빨라요. 어느 덧 9년차 가수가 됐으니까요. 요즘은 방송사에 가도 인사를 거의 안 해요. 어린 후배들 밖에 없고...심지어 띠동갑에 가까운 친구들도 있더라고요."(환희)

플투스, 아주 특별한 두번의 듀엣 기대만발 [articel]

새 앨범 ‘No Limitations’를 발매하고 온 오프라인 차트를 석권하며 다시 인정받고 있는 플라이 투 더 스카이가 아주 특별한 듀엣을 보여줄 예정이다.

플라이 투 더 스카이는 ‘My Angel’로 각종 차트 1위를 달리며 전성기를 이어가고 있다. 이들은 29일 방송되는 KBS 2TV ‘뮤직뱅크’와 SBS ‘인기가요’에서 파트너를 바꿔가며 아주 특별한 듀엣으로 새로운 모습을 선보인다.

SBS ‘인기가요’에서는 신인 힙합그룹 트레스패스(trespass)와 함께 솔리드의 ‘나만의 친구’를 부른다. 플라이 투 더 스카이는 여름 발라드의 인기를 이끌고 있기에 신나는 댄스 음악을 방송에서 부르는 것은 오랜만이다.

그렇기에 더욱 연습에 매진했다는 후문이다. 함께 출연하는 트레스패스의 경우 힙합으로 워낙 잔뼈가 굵은 팀이라 기세에 눌리지 않겠다는 각오로 녹화에 임했다.

KBS 2TV ‘뮤직뱅크’에서는 스페셜 스테이지를 통해 제이와 함께 ‘My Angel’과 ‘눈물로’를 함께 부른다.

제이의 ‘눈물로’의 경우는 이미 듀엣곡으로 이정과 함께 불렀던 노래다. 그러나 ‘My Angel’은 플라이 투 더 스카이 두 사람만의 화음을 자랑했었기에 여성가수 중 슬픈 감정을 잘 표현하기로 유명한 제이와 함께 불러 새롭고도 아름다운 하모니를 만들어냈다고 한다.

플라이 투 더 스카이의 이번 앨범에는 두 사람의 성장한 모습을 보여 주기 위해 듀엣 곡을 넣지 않았다. 그만큼 공을 들였던 그들이기에 29일 두 번의 듀엣무대가 더욱 기다려진다.

환희, "강타와 똑같다는 얘기듣고 연습벌레 돼" [articel]|

[마이데일리 = 이규림 기자] 남성 듀오 플라이투더스카이의 환희가 "데뷔 초기 강타, 신혜성과 똑같은 목소리라는 이야기가 가장 스트레스 거리였다"고 밝혔다.

환희는 최근 마이데일리와의 인터뷰에서 "아무래도 같은 소속사에 있다보면 같은 프로듀서나 작곡가의 곡을 부를 기회가 많기 때문에 그 분들의 취향에 맞추게 된다"며 "그러다보니 같은 소속사 가수들은 비슷한 창법을 구사하게 되는 경우가 종종 있다"고 설명했다.

"데뷔 초기 강타, 신혜성과 목소리나 창법이 똑같다는 이야기를 많이 들었다"는 환희는 "그 얘기가 너무 싫어서 노래 연습을 정말 많이 했다"고 말했다.

환희는 가요계에서 인정받는 연습벌레. 가수들 사이에 '환희는 밥먹는 시간과 자는 시간 외에는 노래만 부른다'는 이야기가 공공연히 나돌며 전진 등 많은 가수들이 가장 본받고 싶은 가수로 꼽고 있다.

환희는 "2집, 3집 때 루터 벤드로스, 에릭 베넷 등 다양한 팝 가수들의 노래를 많이 따라 불렀다"며 "당시 나만의 창법을 개발했고 그 후로 아무도 우리에게 누구와 노래 부르는게 비슷하다는 말을 하지 않았다"고 말했다.

환희는 우는 듯한 목소리의 독특한 창법으로 많은 사랑을 받았으며 이후 투샤이, 먼데이키즈, SG워너비 등이 비슷한 창법으로 지금까지 '우는 창법'의 맥을 이어오고 있다.

플라이 투더 스카이는 "후배들이 기사나 방송에서 '제 2의 플라이투더스카이'가 되고 싶다는 이야기를 하거나 우리의 창법을 따라할 때 우리가 잘하고 있구나하는 생각을 한다"며 "하지만 어쩐지 밥그릇을 뺏기는 기분이 들어 요즘엔 긴장도 된다(웃음)"고 전했다.

Criticisms

Prior to the duo's transition to R&B, critics were displeased as despite being promoted as serious artists that appeal to older audiences, they felt that the duo was no different from other popular teen idols at that time. In a lengthy interview with music review site "52street", the site described the duo in the early years as, "trendy hairstyle, thick make-up, and flashy dance moves."

As their career matured, critics have pointed that Fly to the Sky has yet to find their own style. The duo has been criticized for lack of creative control over their works and relying heavily on composers whose distinct styles overpower their vocals. During their career they have written lyrics for four songs in albums Gravity and No Limitations. Music critic Shin Hye Rim says,“ Ironically, Fly to the Sky's sixth album Transition, which means change or transformation, shows no significant improvement. Despite that this album is their first step under their new label, the album almost turns out just the way we have predicted. Fany's thick tone color and Brian's clean-cut voice fuse to make music that spits out sorrow. That's about it. ”


Their appearances at variety shows were met with scrutiny as the duo were seen frequently outside of music programs during 2006.[31] They were one of many artists who hopped on a bandwagon to promote their albums by appearing comical on variety shows. Critics have said their choice was like a double-edged sword; while they gained more publicity and a more viewer-friendly image, they were compromising their image as professional artists. From January to February 2006, Seoul YWCA conducted a research to study variety shows that air from 6PM to 8PM. The research concluded that "variety shows star the same celebrities and air similar content." The article listed celebrities who frequent those shows, of which Brian was one of them. He appeared in television shows of three major broadcasting networks of Korea during the same time slot on January 6 and January 29.

Musical style

The duo's debut single "Day by Day" was a light bubblegum love song. Their subsequent songs were a combination of R&B, pop rap, and hip-hop until 2002, when the duo abandoned bubblegum pop. Since 2002, they opted for a blend of heavy R&B and Korean pop. They continue to sing love songs, and some of them continue to incorporate hip-hop and rap from Brian.

The duo differs in their taste of music. Producer of Transition, Hwang Se-Jun, has said Fany prefers pure R&B while Brian likes music with distinct beats and has a strong liking for rap. Despite his passion, their 2006 studio album Transition does not feature any. Brian predicts that there will no longer be any opportunity to include his rap in their album, and dislikes "being generalized as a duo comprised of one rapper and one vocalist." He lamented the waning popularity of hip-hop in South Korea where "hip-hop is merely labeled as dance music in Korea."

Fany starred in the MBC series Over the Rainbow with co-stars Kim Ok-Bin and Ji Hyun Woo. The series first aired on July 26, 2006, and ended on its 16th episode on September 14, 2006. Fany's portrayal of cocky rock star Rex, the protagonist of the show, was met with mixed reviews. The drama had struggled with low viewership well below 10% throughout its airing. The finale garnered meager ratings of 9.3% and was criticized for its predictable ending.

After the contract to SM Entertainment expired, the duo, Brian in particular, has appeared frequently on variety shows since 2005. Brian became one of two MCs for MBC's "Music Core" on May 6, 2006. This helped Brian gain publicity and expand his fanbase in ways he could not have in the early days of his career. After the duo officially took a hiatus from their sixth album, Brian continues to appear on variety shows such as Love Letter, and is still the MC of Music Core.

Brian's solo album was released December 18, 2006. Brian performed his first single, "Gajima" (Don't Go) on Mnet Countdown on December 7.

Musical career

The duo was formed in late 1998 by SM Entertainment. Brian Joo auditioned while he was attending Holy Spirit High School in New Jersey. Hwang Yoon-Suk, later to be known as Fany, was encouraged to audition by a staff member working for the label at his high school festival. Fly to the Sky officially debuted on November 21, 1999 at the LOG-IN H.O.T. Concert and SM Festival Concert '99.

Soon after, the duo released their debut album Day by Day on December 9, 1999, and made their first official television appearance two days later. Unlike their predecessors on their label, popular teen idols at that time, they shied away from upbeat techno and dance music, opting for mid-tempo ballads. The debut became highly successful selling over 250,000 copies. The duo acquired status as the next-generation stars as they won Best New Artist award in 2000. At the same time, the duo failed to rise to instant stardom unlike their predecessors such as H.O.T., whose album sales have passed the one million mark.

Their popularity slowly climbed with the release of their second album The Promise in 2001, which featured more diverse genres than its predecessor. With more upbeat tracks, it peaked at #2, but quickly disappeared from the charts. In the same year, they held a joint concert with Korean R&B singer Kim Jo-Han.


2002-2004: Musical transition

In April 2002, their third album Sea of Love was released while Joo was in New Jersey attending Rutgers University. As a result, Hwang began to perform by himself until Brian returned to Korea. The lead single from the album was the title track, a poppy ballad, and it became a summer hit. Their second single "Condition of my Heart" was written by American singer Brian McKnight; in contrast to the first single, "Condition" was a heavier ballad. The single signaled the duo's musical transition from bubblegum music to R&B. Along with their music, their image began to change as the duo traded in their "bishounen" look for a more masculine image.

Their 2003 studio album Missing You featured more tracks that departed from bubblegum music and emphasized their vocal skills for an image as serious artists. Performing commercially well, the album gave the duo many awards including "Bonsang" award from SBS Gayo Daejun and Korea Music Awards. This period is remembered for the highly publicized death of their manager, who was also the manager of BoA, another Korean singer. On a variety show, both members recalled this incident as an emotionally hard time for them. Fany was especially shocked, because he was on the same vehicle with his manager just hours before the incident.

In November 2004, the duo released their fifth and last studio album under SM Entertainment, Gravity. The album received little promotion, and became the duo's lowest-selling studio album, selling just below 90,000 copies. Nevertheless, they held their first official concert successfully in Jamsil Arena on December 21, 2004, and received "Best R&B Artist" award from SBS Gayo Daejun. A controversy rose as critics questioned their eligibility for the award, because the album was released only two months before the show. They challenged the credibility and fairness of SBS Gayo Daejun in its entirety as the artists who boycotted SBS such as YG Family or those who were not present did not receive any awards. They scorned the show as "a party for only those who were present."

The release of their Greatest hits album Eternity in 2005 coincided with the release of the soundtrack of Korean drama Fashion 70s which featured the duo. The popular Korean show made their song "가슴 아파도" ("Although My Heart Aches"), the theme song of the show, an unexpected hit. Eternity is the last Fly to the Sky album released by SM Entertainment.


2004-2006: Post-SM Entertainment

After Fly to the Sky's contract with SM Entertainment expired in November 2004, the duo signed on with PFull Entertainment. The duo stated that they wanted a smaller label that was willing to promote them as musicians and focus less on commercial success. Under this label, Fly to the Sky released their sixth studio album Transition after a year-long hiatus in January 2006. The album became massively successful, selling over 160,000 copies.

The duo embarked on their first nationwide tour, "Fly To The Sky: 2006 The Twice Tour". Starting from Jamsil Arena in Seoul in May 2006, they held concerts in Busan, Daegu, Junju, and Kwangju. Including the number of audiences in the encore concert in Seoul, the tour garnered more than 50,000 people.

To commemorate the success of Transition, Fly To The Sky released a special new edition, which included music videos, deleted scenes and the additional tracks "Hwan Sang (Illusion)," "Hot and Cold," and "When I Say."

In 2004 and 2005, the duo's uncertain future after their contract with SM Entertainment led to a speculation that they would disband. Brian Joo publicly addressed the rumours on SBS show "Yah Shim Man Man," which aired on July 10. He admitted that the two had difficulties in the early days of their career and said that he had been troubled by feelings of inferiority to Fany, because he received more attention and praise than him. Despite their status as a duo, he felt that he was not given his due or the same amount of attention as Hwang. Eventually he found this difficult to bear, and suggested to him that they pursue their separate paths. Hwang responded angrily and the matter escalated into a serious fight nearly leading to disbandment. The two reconciled soon after, and said they "grew to better understand each other and realized that they both needed each other. Afterwards, the pair decided to try to better understand each other in order to solve their problems together and to support each other. After reflecting on this incident, Joo's eyes were brimming with tears.

Since 2006, the duo has been seen frequently on variety shows and pursued individual careers. Hwang appeared on Korean television drama "Over the Rainbow" during summer of 2006, and Joo released his solo album The Brian in December 2006. As they appeared more often on non-music programs, the duo saw an increase in their popularity and backlash from critics at the same time as they felt the duo were compromising their image as artists.


2007: No Limitations

The duo's seventh album No Limitations is expected for release on July 4, 2007. Their first television performance to promote the album will be made on June 29, 2007. Confirmed tracks are "Oneuldo Eebbeungul," ("오늘도 이쁜걸" Pretty Today Too) "Geuraedo Sarangipnida," ("그래도 사랑입니다" It's still love) and "Gee-uk Han Joom" ("기억 한 줌" Grain of Memory)
